Turn-based, RPG-based, smaller games with more personability work. In my humble opinion, this reboot of the franchise was the right way to go. This seems to be a common theme in sci-fi and fantasy, which I think is reflective of the creators losing interest in it. The lore spiraled downwards, the books got worse, and ultimately the whole universe was screwed. That wasn't really fun for me, and what came after was just torture. The whole point of the game was to play with mechs, and I ended up being ****ing Georgi Zhukov. Instead, I had to create legions of impersonal tankers and infantry, just to keep up with the stupid Clans, which responded by only ever deploying more over-powered crap. No longer could I spend time carefully crafting backstories, Mechwarriors, and their mechs. This is another ambitious mod for BattleTech that adds more story and new mechs, vehicles, and all manner of things to BattleTech. Battletech turrned from a fun tactical combat game into a strategic chore alsmot overnight, at least for me. 1 BTA3062 Pushes BattleTech Further Into The Future. Better than humans at everything and so chock-full of Mary-Sues and Marty-Stus that they aren't even believeable. Then the Clans came along and really ruined it. If everyone has the ability, it's no longer appealing. The whole appeal of a Battlemech is that it makes you powerful. Anything that common is less cool, especially here. Suddenly, everyone had regiments of Battlemechs. That all started to go away after the Gray Death Legion's discovery of a Star League cache. A single Battlemech is supposed to be a very powerful force, a lance of them can conquer a planet, and the people who pilot them are exceptional. The 31st Century is a dark age of technology. I would argue that the "cool" factor was lost well before then.
